Biodynamic Farming

Biodynamic Farming is an agricultural practice that brings life back to soil and to the farm. Biodynamic agriculture has now challenged conventional agriculture in all aspects from farming economic efficiency and harvest yields to ecological safety and long-term improvement of soil, every farm’s foundation.

Sustainable biodynamic farming practice is a life-enriching experience and an ultimate way to the harmony with Nature. Building carbon and nutrient rich humus into the soil is the common foundation of all good farming; increasing quality production through improved soil health and higher soil water retention while providing drought and flood tolerance — biodynamic farmers work with soil and plants as living, dynamic manifestations of a relationship between two poles. Why Biodynamic Farming is not commonly practiced?
Despite obvious benefits of biodynamic farming, it remains “hidden” from the wide range of farmers and agronomists behind the doors of “industrialization”. Many modern farms no longer just produce food but provide income for quite a few pseudo-scientists and agrichem corporations who are trying to reinvent and outperform Nature while telling farmers how to farm.

According to many experts in the United Nations, the real obstacle to a better sustainable farming practice worldwide is the accumulated knowledge gap which was caused by many decades of wrong directions of agronomic research which has been misled by large agrochemical corporations.

The lack of information on agro-ecology and the high demand for management skills are major barriers to the adoption of sustainable agriculture.

Even in the 21st Century, Humanity has not learned to use the most efficient nature-balanced methods of farming largely relying on hazardous pesticides and s7nthetic fertilizers which have been proven to cause soil degradation around the World thus jeopardizing the quality and the very supply of food.

The basics of Biodynamic Farming
The Earth is the physical element, and the Sun and Cosmos is a non-material element extending to the farthest expanse of the Universe, providing the energetic stimulus for life on Earth. To enhance both these influences biodynamic farmers use two sprays, horn manure preparation 500 as a soil spray, enhancing soil biology, plant vigor and rooting depth, and horn silica preparation 501 as an atmospheric or foliar spray, increasing photosynthesis and improving quality of plants. Small amounts are sprayed sparingly over the land, promoting more balanced plants less susceptible to insect and fungal attack. horn manure biodynamic preparation 500Insect, fungus and weed problems are viewed by Biodynamics as symptoms, or messengers, of imbalances in soil and stress in plants. Biodynamic farmers find that addressing the stress proves more effective than shooting the messengers. Use of these two sprays (preparation 500 and preparation 501) quickly brings renewed life and character to the farm.

Another element to biodynamic growing is using the rhythmic energies of the Moon and Planets. We all use the daily and annual Sun rhythms as a matter of course in our lives. It is well known that the Moon is connected to the tides but less well known is that it also works with all fluid elements in soil and plants. Biodynamic farmers widen their observations and rhythmic practices, learning to include these extra terrestrial influences in farm work. They use astronomy, the physical stars in the sky, not astrology. These astronomical influences exist independent of our willingness to work with them; you may notice that some plantings germinate fast, some slow, some bolt to head while others remain inactive. Working with the rhythms of the Sun, Moon and planets can lead to understanding these variations in growth patterns. Farmers who plan their farm work to include these rhythms find great enjoyment and excellent results, lightening the work and optimizing farm’s production.

Biodynamics represents the best practices of organic agriculture. Biodynamic farming methods are based on many centuries of accumulated farming experience and cannot be privatized or patented by any country, organization or individual. Thus, biodynamic farming methods can be easily attained and put to practice by any farmer in any country.
